Hello,
I am brand new to chip carving but have been working with wood on and off for about thirty years.
I still desire to learn something new every day, and wish to seek help from the members on some chip carving subjects.
Does anyone here know of a source(s) for information on either African chip carving arts styles, or Pacific islands chip carving arts? I know of no one place that you can get only these styles but there are several bits and pieces scattered in many chip carving books and booklets. Maybe try searching the internet for those art designs.
Has anyone here chip carved Ebony? I haven't tried Ebony yet but have some other hardwoods and have found that a knife is a struggle, and that was a thick bladed knife, so I went to carving chisels and had success.
Where would I find information on "tips or techniques" for chip carving in the round as would be applied to walking sticks, clubs, canoe paddles, or various handled work implements. Check with Barry McKenzie at
The Barry McKenzie School for Chip Carving he has several articals on this subject. Another good source is Marty Leenhouts
My Chip Carving
Is there a specific type of chip carving knife/s that would work better in hardwoods, and with smaller multiple repetitive cuts in free form designs as found on the above mentioned Pacific island wooden tools? The harder the wood the thicker the blade needs to be or the wood will bend it and might even break it. The Barton blade is a good thick one.
Many thanks for your help
