Default Chip Carving-Drafting

I'm curious to know if you draft your chip carvings by hand using a compass, ruler, protractor... or do you use a drafting program. I am working on a design my hand and found that one little mismeasurement throws the entire design off.

I do them by hand, as described by Wayne Barton in his books.

Mine are all layed out direct onto the board using the drafting tools and others.

I have done some Wayne Barton-type leaf designs freehand with just simple marks to divide the space. But, for chip carved plate designs I lay them out carefully with indexed divisions.

Since all of my chip carving has been pre-existing wood pieces I've always hand drafted them to fit the dimensions. If I ever create a chip carving from scratch I'll use graph paper to get it right the first time.

Since I used Autocad for 16 plus years before I was forced to retire, I do all of my preliminary design work on the computer. Then with a printed copy in hand I lay it out on the wood with hand drafting tools.

Jody,
I use a combination of by hand and Corel Draw to put my designs together. Then I cheat. I paste the design on the wood using rubber cement and cut thru the paper. The paper peals off when I am done. I carve a lot of the same designs and this speeds up the process. Works for me.
