Default Chip Carving - Chicken or the egg question

As a newbie I have question about chip carving a box or something that needs some assembly. Do you chip carve a box before or after it is put together?

Before.
Stain it before assembly, too, if that's what you're planning to do the piece.

For a new person to chip carving I would suggest carving before assembly. I always try to chip carve and stain after the box is assembled. It is eaiser for me to correct imperfections with the assembly process without the carving being there. If you should have to sand over the carved area the chips won't be crisp and there will be small flat spots on the areas between chips. I should also say that in some instances you can't chip carve after the assembly due to top overhangs and such. Good Luck!
