Default chip carving board

in the Holiday 2009 issues is a plan for a chip carving board. I finished it 2 days agao and wow, it is great. It allows me to carve on the lap (which scares me a bit) and on the table top (which I prefer). Using the carving board on the table top allows me to keep the right "chicken wing" arm close in to my body which enhances accuracy. Since I have used this board, my cuts have improved and if it continuses this way, I may have to buy my own firewood.

I saw that carving board and it looked like it would work.

Several years ago when I started chip carving I made what I call a lap board.

I had the same fear as you did, that I would cut myself. I also liked the feel of the carved piece being on a solid surface. I made it so it would sit flat with the angle of my lap.

I stappled the nonslip material on the back edge so it can be used if needed.

That is a great loookin lap board. It seems to bring the carving at an improved angle and elevation. I have noticed with mine I get "slumped shoulders"..from bending to the board surface. I will give yours a try.

Thanks

ED

Go with Rog's board.
I had 7 stitches and 8 staples put into my thigh a year ago last August because I forced a cut (Chip carving, if you can believe it!) while holding the work piece on my lap. I was VERY lucky that the surgical slice I made with the freshly sharpened chip carving knife was clean and shallow.

I learned my lesson the hard way:
Always protect where the blade might go if it went through the wood.
Always!
Never force the cut.
Never!

Good Luck.

Russ

thanks Russ, I saw the awful cut you suffered on the post. I will take your advice as their are additional considerations upwards of my thigh that the blade reminds me of ..... continuosly.

Know what you mean....I was chip carving a thin christmas ornament on my lap that a friend had given to me. I did not know that he had cut it out short grain and when I pressed to make the cut, the piece broke and I received 5 stitches in my finger. Consolation was.....I didn't cut into my thigh.

That is a beauty. A real original. Whoever made that was an outstanding craftsman.

I think(pretty sure) that it is a commercial product for working with a lap top PC on a sofa, or, LOL, in bed.

Kinda a modern high tech breakfast tray.

My buddy saw it and grabbed it for a song the thigh pad is velcro attached and can be removed.

I plan to use it as a template to make some "improved" variations for various hobbies.
