Default Chip Carved Rooster and Pattern

So I know that I have been AWOL in posting something new on the carving table ... and it's all BobD's fault (Fox Chapel) because I have another book deadline for June 1st ... but in a fit of 'I just have do carve something or go crazy" this weekend I grabbed a nice little piece of basswood and my favorite chip knife.

This is being worked on a 14" high x 12" wide basswood. I think that if I count correctly I only have 623 more triangles to cut ... AHHH!

Glad that you've made time to get the carving bug out of your system. Roosters are one of the most popular projects for my Mexican-American students. Beautiful pattern and project... thanks for finding a minute to post!

Not that we don't love your books, we also love seeing your work. So BobD better let you do your carving or I'll send the Green Chili Mafia after him.

This is great Susan I have a sister who collects roosters this would be a great addition to her collection. There I go giving myself another project.

Hey hurry up with that book by the way. I need all the help I can get.

Hey Susan,

That is an awesome chip carving. I just took my first chip caving class at our club in March with one of our members. It was very challenging but also very fun.

Is there any way you could post a pic of your knife that you are using, please?

Can't wait to see the finished piece. I also have an Aunt that collects roosters. She would love this.

Thanks again for everything you contribute and do for us. But I also enjoy just seeing your work and what you are working on for yourself. Thanks for sharing.

Another one of your many fans.

Blessings,
Tina

Love the Rooster. It kind of has a chinese ink painting quality. Can we use the pattern you posted?

Susan, as we have come to expect from you. Great design and great carving. I have a special fondness for chip carvings probably because I have absolutely no interest in doing one myself.....too much precision for me.

Yes Kitaye! The patterns that I post here are posted for you guys to use and enjoy ...

Corey, the Relief Wood Spirits book is literally on the slow boat from China as we speak and it should be in house around the first week of June. This one is another relief carving pattern book full of smaller designs. That's what is taking so much time as I am working on the drawing/sketches part of the book. I never learned how to 'whip' a drawing off the drawing board ... so each one is taking several hours to complete. Then there are two more for this year and several in the "penciled on the calander' stage for next year.

LightningBolt, hope you will post any photos that you can get of your students version of the rooster

Teeburn, I am using a small Dennis Moor Chip Knife for this one. It's one of the very first knives that I bought when I first started carving. I'll try and grab photos later today if I get a few moments.

Thanks for the nice words everyone!

Susan

Hi Susan, just settled down long enough to realize you had a goodie for us. Wow, this is a terrific chip carve I really like the design and the border really adds to the design.
I have a fellow carver who does nothing but chip carving and I know she would love to give this one a try. As you have given your permission for us to use your pattern I'm going to pass it along to her. She doesn't have a computer, but if she does this one I'll post it here. She is a wonderful chip carver and I know would do a fantastic job on this one.
Thanks, again Susan for your generousity and glad you broke away from your Fox Chapel book project and did this for us.
Also, I just love your avatar, brings a smile to my face everytime I see it!
Kathy
