Default Chip carved quotes

These are a few wall plaques with quotes on them that I just finished up. These are all made from basswood and stained.

I made this one for a local benefit.

I made this one for a very special person.

I made this one to sell or for myself.

Very nice chip carved plaques, Rog. You did a great job and I really like the quotes, too. Thanks for sharing.

I used a narrow Dunkle chip carving knife for the entire piece.

Wow, that is very impressive. I have a large Barton chip knife, I will have to try a Dunkle. And some more practice.

Roger, I love these plaques. I assume the narrow knife lets you make turns more consistant without stopping? Thanks for posting the pics. This is exactly what I want to head towards. I would appreciate any info you would be willing to give on the finish also. Thanks

The smaller knife helps with the turns yes but more than anything these letters are only a 1/16" or less in depth. The Dunkle knife is very thin at the point which is for the most part why it goes around the curves better. For the finish I spray a light coat of lacquer on the piece after I carve it then gel stain it. After the stain is dry I use satin lacquer for top coat. Good Luck!

Wow, beautiful work on the plaques Roger!

I’m an aspiring chip carver with barely one week under my belt and if you don’t mind I have a few questions.

What method do you use to layout the fonts? The shapes appear to be perfect as well as the spacing. I know I’m a long way from being able to carve lettering like this, but learning how to do the layout properly would be the obvious first step. Also could you post the size of the plaques to get a sense of scale?

All three of the plaques are very nice but the one with the Wayne Barton quote is my favorite. The technique you used on the free form branches and the leaves and the overall design is really great!

Is the narrow Dunkle chip carving knife you used the standard high point, and do you use that knife for most of your chip carving work?

Thanks for sharing the pictures!
