Default Carving ideas for a crib

I'm working on a crib, and would like to add some light carving once I’m done with the joinery. The crib is kind of a mission-style design, though, and I haven’t seen too many pieces of mission furniture with ornamentation. Does anyone have any examples or ideas of designs that won’t look out of place?

Design is similar to this, but with a wide center panel on the front and back.

Sean,

As you mentioned, Mission style furniture is usually not very ornate in nature. If you wanted to do something, I'd say to keep it subtle. First thing that comes to mind is lettering. The Family name or a line for a nursery rhyme on the back and/or front panels would work. If you'd like something a little more ornate Wayne Barton has a chip carved "leaf" element that he uses. Maybe apply something similar in a manner of a triangle for the corners or just at the ends of the lettering. The possibilities are endless as far as to "what" could be carved.

Have fun with it.

Greg

Since I have little or no imgination, being a baby crib in Mission style I just don't know if a Disney character would fit.I'm in the middle of building a rocker for the daughter and her baby and wanting to add a simple carving and just can't come up w/something.Good luck to us both---Carroll
