Default I Carved This Lion

I carved this lion a couple of weekends ago. I'm not completely happy with it but I'm still learning. I just need to keep with it until I get better.

I carved this from a pattern by Lora S. Irish that is in her wonderful book 101 Artistic Relief Patterns for Woodcarvers, Woodburners, and Crafters. I love the patterns in this book and the book is one of my favorites.

Thanks for looking.

Well you sure have a nice set up there.
Your lion turned out great. Susan's book is wonderful isn't it? I have several of her books and use them as references often.
Where are you in North Georgia ?

I am not a relief carver (though I want to learn it) but I see a a lot of really good aspects of the carving. The main thing I see that sort of detracts is the overall squareness of the carving, but if you look at the pattern it is square that way too. To me, lions are round, so that may be part of what is bothering you about the overall piece...I think the individual details are great.

Grand! Where ever you are in your wood carving experience you're doing some outstanding work. Thanks for sharing the 'King' with us.

BTW, great looking workstation.

P.S. I do believe Susan's book needs to be added to my workstation too.

Ratrick, Slowmover, and Thor, I appreciate the kind words and compliments. I suppose you would call it an artistic lion - it's obviously not a realistic lion pattern.

I am near Cartersville, GA which is about 40 miles north of Atlanta.
