I am catching up on a lot of different threads and just got to look all the way through the progress you've made on the buffalo. What a great job you've done! Your talent really spreads itself out over many different mediums and techniques.
So, do you like relief carving after doing this? or are you going back to the pyro thing as soon as you're done?
That buffalo is terrific, and I am looking forward to seeing the next stage as you add the stain.

| | Re: Buffalo WIP Brian: Thank you, I"m also anxious to see how the basswood takes the stain. As Susan (Irish) in her book used this mixture on basswood it should come out good. Bob: Thank you, I too like to see progress images as I learn a lot too. By the way I got my WCI issue yesterday and WOW what an excellent article and step by step you did on 'Carving a Half Hull Ship Model.' I'm such a fan! Thor: Thank you, and glad you made it back from Costa Rica safe and sound. As this is my first relief carving I shouldn't use the word 'love' but I'm going to anyway. I really do love relief carving and plan to continue studying and practing to get better. I also love pyrography and would like to be able to combine the two if the subject calls for it. Sooooo the answer is YES! I will continue on with relief carving.
In regards to 'spreading myself out over many mediums and techniques' That is one of my biggest failures I'm knowledgable in many mediums and master of none. But what a ride!!!!!!!!!!!! MDWine: Thank you, I will post an image when I'm done. I'll see if I can get a side shot so you can see the depth. Speaking of depth the panel/plank is actually 3/4 inch thick not 1 inch thick. Thank you everyone for you compliments and comments I really do value everyone of them. Kathy

| | Re: Buffalo WIP Kathy, he looks really good. I think I'm enjoying relief carving the most also. I'm even thinking of getting a joiner to do bigger pieces.

| | Re: Buffalo WIP Hi Mel, thank you I will look forward to seeing some large works by you. By joiner is that a tool of some kind to assist one in layering wooden planks together?

| | Re: Buffalo WIP Hi Kathy, thats pretty much what it is. I'm going to check them out more, might even send a post to see what the other tool junkies might have to say about it or reccomend, right now I'm leaning toward a table top model since I don't have that much room. The reliefs I have done have been small, no bigger than 6x6x3/4, I won't to do one more like 16x16, and even bigger.
What were the demensions of the buffalo you did, was it 3/4" thick, if I remember right thats what the thickness of the one Susan did was?

| | Re: Buffalo WIP Mel, that's a good idea other's will be of good help I'm sure.
Susan's buffalo relief carving was done on 3/4 inch 9 x 12 in. basswood. Mine is done on 3/4 inch 8 x 10 inch basswood. I couldn't find a 9 x 12 inch piece so had to settle for 8 x 10 inch.
I'd like to work larger at some point too. But for now I'll probably stay in the 9 x 12 inch range.
In March there is a carving show in Mesa and I understand there will be carving wood for sale. So hope to pick some up--Hi Ho gave me the name of a few online sites where wood can be purchased. Good luck with your research if I should come across any info I'll pass it on to ya.
Kathy
PS: Cleaned up my buffalo relief of fuzzy's and tiny chips and applied one coat of Danish Varnish. Tomorrow I hope to have time to start staining the buffalo. |

I left the background natural as Susan's suggests with this project. Waiting now for the stain to dry so I can add the varnish. You sound like me now it took me a while to try relief and I'm sorry it took me so long because I love it! Sooooooooo don't wait a day longer to start yours. I just bought a couple more planks to start more...... Kathy |

| | Re: Buffalo WIP FINAL Hi All: Well, I think it's a wrap on this one what do you think? The only thing I may do is go back before applying the varnish and darken the nose a bit. What do you think? This has been a wonderful project for me and I plan to do many more. As always I value your thoughts and suggestions for improvement. I also want to thank you for your encourgement while I've been working on this it means a lot. Kathy | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
