UPDATE #4:

Hi All, here is the latest--still working the peaks and valleys of the facial form.
When this is complete then I can move onto adding the fur detail--which should be less nerve racking. Please don't get me wrong I love doing relief carving it's just I'm such a newbie. patience grasshopper patience. LOL

Mel, Gary and Gilly thank you--I wont post another update until I finish adding the fur--so may be a little while or maybe not. LOL After I finish the fur I think I may do a little burning to enrich the dark values of the fur.
I really appreciate your thoughts and comments and if you see something you question I want to hear about that too! I may or maynot have the answer...tee hee

UPDATE

Hi All, I've added the fur to the buffalo now he won't be so cold.
I see a few fur area's that need my attention but over all I think it's going to be OK.
Tomorrow I'll add a coat of Danish varnish to the whole plank. Then follow Susan's instructions for staining the buffalo using bt. umber oil paint and linseed oil mix. I decided, on this one not to do any burning--stay with the program while learning.
Not sure how I want to stain the frame it's self...something that will present an overall pleasing look.
I've worked on this for a few weeks now and the realization that it's coming to completion is bitter sweet. I will post a final....Then will start another as soon as this one is finished.
Kathy
PS: Sorry the fur depth doesn't show up in the WCI upload software. Where there is flat areas there actually is fur there.

Your buffalo looks really good!

I'm anxious to see how the stain effects the depth perception of your carving.

Great job Mottles, I enjoy watching a project come together in stages like that! I learn a lot from your pictures. Thank you for sharing them with us. Can't wait for the staining process.
