Default Buffalo WIP

Buffalo Relief on basswood WIP
8 x 10 inches 1 inch thick
Hi All, thought I’d show a relief carving I’m presently working on. This is a pattern from Susan Irish’s book ‘Wildlife Carving in Relief.’ I thought the buffalo would be a good choice for a first effort. As Susan has this one as a step by step and I think it will be something I can follow along with.
So far I have outlined the outside of the buffalo utilizing the stop cut technique. I have started to drop the background area to 1/4th inch depth. This process will take a while as it’s going to be slow as you go. LOL
By the way Susan’s book is wonderful, good instruction and the patterns are terrific.

Image isn't showing well don't understand why it looks blurry. Will try and correct......sorry...

Kathy
Well this one is a little better. The image looks good when I save it, but somewhere between cyberspace and WCI--things get blurry. LOL

Kathy,
That looks as if its going to be an awsome carving. I love the buffalo, did you know that is the emblem for the RCMP it is on our cap badge. So I am looking forward to seeing the finished result.

I love it! I've been searching the web for a pattern just like this, where did you find it? I think it will be beautiful when it's finished.

Kathy, it is going to be beautiful I'm sure! Is this your first carving or a first relief? Look forward to seeing it done.

Dave: Thank you, I'm really enjoying working on this relief. Went to the Wood Bee Carvers meeting Sat. and one of the members that was there is a relief carver. She was great and gave me a lot of instruction. Along with Susan's book lots of good knowledge for me.

Colin: Thank you, Susan did a wonderful job of drawing the pattern steps for this project and I recommend it to all. As I recall I read you are a retired Canadian Mountie--very cool. I'll try and do jusdice to Susan's wonderful buffalo.

Gilley: Hi, and thank you....the buffalo pattern is from a book by Susan Irish entitled 'Wildlife Carving in Relief' Fox Chapel is the publishing company for the book. I bought it from Susan's website also there are free e-projects and ones you can purchase. Plan to spend some time there as it's just chalked full of interesting things. Here is Susan's website http://www.carvingpatterns.com/ If the pattern rights were (buffalo) mine soley I'd post the pattern but as it belongs to Susan her permission would be needed.

Gary: Hi There and thank you too, I'm trying very hard to do a good job on this relief. As it's my first everything is very new to me.

Thanks everyone I really appreciate your comments and as always your all so encouraging.
Kathy
Will update when I finish taking back the background.

Hi Nancy, sorry missed your post must have slipped in while I was replying. Thank you, yes this is my first relief carving and I'm enjoying it very much. I have done some small carvings and I'm known more as a woodburner.
Thank you again for your nice compliment.
Kathy
