The Blackball Line was a company that ran packet ships (passenger sailing ships) from their home base in England to North America and Australia. There was a major movement of people to the colonies, from the British Isles, and the packet ships were the backbone of that trade. These vessels were often built in Canada and sold to British companies, but Scotland , Ireland and England had big shipyards as well. Canada had hugh resources in timber, so shipyards sprung up in many places along the East coast. This period was just pre-clipper period (1830 - 1860). The Blackwallers were renown for their speed and efficiency. Marco Polo, built in Saint John, NB, in 1851, was immediately sold to the Blackball Line and worked the Australian route for many years. This carving is done in Basswood, measures 18" x 12" x 1 1/2" deep. Bob

Bob, YOU are the man! I think what I like so much is that it is not "just another ship", but it has a story. Nice work.... keep'm coming!

Bob, this is just like the rest that you carve, one GREAT carving along with some background about the piece! This is definetly another eye popper! Would it be possable to take a picture of this from off to one side so we can see more of the depth of this piece? Keep the carvings coming.
