Default Basswood Lotus

I am really interested in all sorts of Asian designs, Himalayan in particular, and this is my first attempt at something with such an influence. It is a lotus flower that I found via GIS and Photoshopped a bit into a pattern. Here goes:

Pattern:

Stenciled on to the basswood plank that I had as scrap:

Partial rough-out:

Finished product:

I used Minwax Red Mahogany as a stain but have yet to seal the piece. I didn't use a pre-treatment on the wood because I hoped to get a "rustic feel" from the stain... I guess I mean "blotchy". This is the first of three pieces that will include another lotus and a Buddha bust (a present for my significant other).

Any comments or suggestions for improvements would be appreciated!

Thats really nice!

I have seen some of the wood carvings on various musical instruments from Indonesia at a recent concert and like the styles they carve.

Very nice...different. I'm looking forward to seeing how your Buddha comes out.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the nice comments about my carving! I am working on the Buddha bust right now and am having a hard time getting it just right, so we will see how it turns out...
