Default back to chip carving

I been working real hard on caricatures, watcing the videos, Gene Messer, Lynn Doubty. Great stuff. But, I need a breask and go back to chipping for the discipline and patience of chippin. The one problem I have is transferring patterns, I can't draw them. Now, has anyone used the heat transfer tool shown on Chipping away? Does it work? and now for a dumb question....how does one produce a mirror copy from a laser of photocopy machine?

I know it is frowned upon in the various books but, Been doing it for a while with no problems. I poly the wood first then use rubber cement to attach pattern to wood. After cutting is done the paper peels off easily. Any stubborn pieces of paper and cemet is removed with a piece of crepe rubber. The crepe is sold as sannading belt cleaner.Works for me.

Thanks. I have tried the rubber glue to the wood and even adhesive backed poly sheets (used in drafting and overhead presentaions. Both were a bit messy. The pattern didn't adhere to the wood very well and woud peel away next to a cut. I havn't tried the photo copy and heat transefer but if looks promising fpr a guy like me with O patience for drawing patterns

You can mirror flip things with graphics software, probably even with GIMP (which is open source and free).
If you have a light table you could trace it while it was face down I guess if you have the patience to trace it.
Of course if it is symetrical it doesn't matter

Don't know what brand cement you used but I've used this method for more than a 1000 carvings and never had a problem. After a week or so the glu tends to dry out and might lift off. Most of my carvings are done in a couple of days.

I hate having to draw my patterns on. takes forever, also I always seam to push to hard on the soft pencils , and it takes forever to get the marks off. so what I do is use 3m45 adhesive spray on the back of a pattern and pres it on my wood. I find no problem carving though the paper. and it removes good with mineral spirits. I do sand my wood first or at least scrape, and burnish first.

Hey all,
I think you will find it helpful to watch the video I've created showing how the Pattern Transfer Tool works.
It's very quick and easy for those of us who would rather carve than draw!
Here's the link - Chip Carving tools, supplies, point to point spacer tool, instant center finder, more

Printing a mirror image is easy too, no software needed.

When you click File/Print, look under the Printer Options or Advanced tab. Once there look around and you should find an option to select that will automatically print a mirror image.

This is perfect when using the Pattern Transfer Tool and your pattern has words and/or numbers on it.

I hope this helps you carve more and more!
Email or call me if I can be of any help!
Marty

From this, it appears to work like a champ.
I plan on getting one pretty soon.

Thats sounds like a good Idea. I never though of applying polyurethan on the wood prior to rubber cementing the pattern

I will give it another try.

I have used the 3M45 adhesive and it does a great job on adhering the pattteen to the wood. HOwever I am having a dickens of a time getting the remainder of the pattern to release from the wood. One dumb thing I did was to apply goof off heavily (almost soaked it) to the wood after carving. Now, the carving smells so bad I can't bring it inot the house but the pattern is long gone. You mentioned applying mineral spirits which I assume is regular paint thinner> If so, how do you apply it and how much?
