A good source for patterns can be found in coloring books. Dover Press has a nice selection and can be found at the Woodcraft Shop. woodcraft shop Bill K. |

Thanks for the replies. Papasar I understand how coloring books can be great for relief carving patterns but how do you convert them to chip carving??? |

Veen, If you look under "Carver Image Galleries" and scan down to the most viewed, you will see an eagle titled "Freedom". This is an exampled of freeform chipcarving. The pattern came from a WB book. Bill K. |

Here's another pattern from Wayne Barton: Heron - Wood Carving Illustrated Photo Gallery It looks like you could take most any good line art of an animal and make it into a chip carving pattern. The major lines could be done with incised lines and textured areas with repeated chips like the wings of this heron. |

Thanks for the great responses. I guess I have done some of this free form carving already but need to open my mind up to more possibilites. I need to think outside of the geometric shapes associated with chip carving. I love that eagle and heron.

Found a few sites on the internet of animals. Most of them are free. I just pic a subject and mark on my board. Then I number from 1-6 or so. 6 being the deepest. Seem to work for me. Will post a pic of a couple Ram heads I'm doing. Depends on what you are interested in doing. Scene the 1-6 seems to work well. Otherwise you have to visualize what is in the distance |
