well I am not sure which leaves you are talking about. but the one on the first plate is,, ,draw a leaf shape no matter what size. well maybe 1" wide or 3/4. and 1 1/2 long,or 2".cut around the outside , of your line, first. cut straight down.(a stop cut) then go around the inside and be vale it towards the first cut.(very thin cut) this sets up the leaf pattern. then I take a v tool to make a vein in the center of the leaf. and smooth it out some with a knife or side of your v tool.very thin slices. be careful hear) then I take small chips down the leaf out side in. very small chips. point your knife down. and gently stab, then pull out towards the inside of the leaf . making the cut like a v. towards the center about a 32nd wide to nothing.I space this cuts about 32nsd of a inch to smaller depending how long your leaf is. about 4 or 5 cuts down the side is good. be cairful you can blow the sides out..(you could take these cuts before shaving the center line first if you wont. the second plate has leaves under the wheat . they are just a line to make the leaf pattern. they just start at the bottom. and cut out away from the line, then back into the line at the top. then the wheat is done with a stab knife. gosh hope this helps. hopefully the pictures will help. thanks for your interest. Evie shoot I did forget to mention, that before you do the center line, you first take some 3 corner chips in the middle of the leaf. you don't have to do the flower in the middle if you don't wont. just take a 3 corner chip out of both sides of the middle. then do the rest. sorry. if you need any more info let me know. That was great, sorry I didn't realize there were leaves on the second plate. Those leaves on the first plate look like they are relief carved. You did a very nice job on them both.

Evie: Your use of leaves in your chip carvings gives a nice relief (pun intended) from the rigid geometry of some designs. Wayne Barton uses a lot of leaves in his designs. Here is an example of one I carved last year: PlateLeaves.jpg |
