Hi everyone, This is my first carving of the year. So, I am a slow carver. I don't seem to get much carving time with little kids. O well. I just wanted to share this relief carving I had just finished. It is the second relief I have ever done. It is basswood, 1 1/4" x 13" x 15". The center is a pattern from Bill Judt. This was a big challenge for me especially carving the lettering for the first time. I think the biggest challenge though was trying to decide what kind of finish to put on. If you may remember I had posted some time ago regarding finishing basswood reliefs. Thanks to you who responded. After many sample pieces I finally decided on my own idea which was this: Two coats of Varathane wood conditioner, One coat of Varathane Natural wood stain and two coats of Minwax clear satin poyurethane. I think the finish turned out pretty good at least I am happy with it. I will be donating this to our son's annual school fundraising auction on March 24. (My wife and I are hoping that whoever wins the bid would donate it to the school to be hung up there somewhere, but if that doesn't happen hopefully it will raise some money for the school anyway). Comments good or bad are welcome. Chipper67

One more thing I forgot to mention. If you notice on the top of Jesus's hand there is a small knot. Believe me when I say this was not intentional. I didn't plan it that way (I know I can't prove it, but it's the truth). It just so happen to turn out that way. It's kind of interesting if you think about it. Chipper67

| Excellent relief carving, I’ve always liked Bill Judt’s style and obvious inspiration. I’ve had clear pieces of wood and as you progress into it, a dark spot, knot or streak turns up. The knot on the hand is an interesting coincidence given the subject, one of those things that make you say hmm. (I like it) I really like the background rays too and the dark behind the text. I think your finish is great. Good luck with the auction |

You did a really good piece. It has been fun watching your progress on this one. Your finish choice worked out well and really brought a nice depth to the piece. Well Done ! Garry |

Nice job! You did quite well with the lettering. I can relate to you as far as carving with young kids around. It is difficult to find a balance. I find it helps to schedule time in at least once a week and then grab it when you can! Progress may be slow but you're still moving ahead.Smile Lynne |

Just wanted to say thanks everyone for your nice comments. Last Saturday was our son's annual school fundraising auction. My relief carving sold for $450.00. I was told that it probably would have went for a lot more money but when several people seen who was bidding on it also they quit. It turns out that the husband of the development director (the lady who organizes the whole event) decided to buy it for her because she stated to a co-worker she wished she could have it herself. The co-worker told her husband and he started bidding on it and won it. I'm kind of hoping someday she will donate it to the school so more people can see it over time. Chipper67
