Whats the chances of having a woodturning section. I know there is a few of us that turn. Its carving but instead of moving a knife to make a cut you are spinning the wood to make a cut. Chips fly just the same. I am just getting back to doing a little turning after having my equipment packed away for 15 years. Fox Chapel seems to have an extensive turning library. Bought a turning book but it took a while to decide witch one to get first as there are many. Thanks, Goody

Goody, You're the only one who has asked for it so far...is there anyone else who wants it? The only reason I hesitate is that there are already some great turning forums out there, and there is no way we can compete with those sites....and I dislike doing anything in a half measure. If more people want it, I can definitely add it, but I'd hate to add it and have it languish... Bob |

I fully understand Bob and appreciate your desire to provide the best site you can. I too love woodturning but would maybe like to throw a twist into this request. Again based on what others feel maybe of interest. I am new to carving - only about a month or so - but have seen some interesting carvings from blanks that were turned - so maybe incorporating a turning with carving - or maybe carving with turning blanks might be better - whatever. I frequent several woodturning forums - but none of them address carving with the turning! For instance check out this site of Gene Webb Wood Carving - Basswood Turnings Just a thought! Again - would be based on what the overall interest would be - I too would hate to see it fail or not used! GREAT SITE! Last edited by Sixty_Vette; 09-21-2010 at 02:00 PM. |

| Goody, I agree with you a bit; turning is a great way to shape wood. And Bob, I agree with you a bit. But IMHO there is an opportunity for a hybrid type of section. I have been turning for over 58 years, and whittled for over 60. Right now I really enjoy carving on a turning. Make a bowl or spindle, then "embellish" it with carving that can not be accomplished with lathe work. It makes people wonder "How did he do that?" Stan Curtis |

I agree that turnings are great to carve on. From eggs, to a Santa carved from a turned blank that we have in our holiday special issue...and even some of the amazing work shown in the Art of Turning book. But I don't know how many members are really interested in the topic. Are there enough to break this out from general carvings category? Bob |

As one who has been carving for decades and turning for about 3 years, I can definitely recommend and support the need for a "hybrid" site. I turn bowls, goblets, lidded boxes and such and use carving (both hand and power), wood burning, dyes, acrylics and stains to get the effects that I desire. Woodcarving and woodturning are complementary artistic endeavors. Check out the work, for example, of Dixie Biggs and others who turn and carve. It just may attract more to this site.

I too would be interested. I've had a lathe for some time but just started using it. Came into some Mesquite thats very hard but turned very nicely. Ed |
