For what it's worth, I recently finished a Celtic knot pattern about 4' square. I burned the background using a high heat to make black dots. Ouch, fingers took a scorching at 6-7 on the Sabre IV. However, I burned a wood grain into the 'ropes' of the knot to make it look like knotted tree branches at 5.5 and worked for several hours with no problem. The setting of about 6 seems to be the limit of the comfort zone with replaceable tips on this machine. Also, those leather finger tip protectors for carving do a fairly good job when used to grip the pen, but it does obscure your vision of the workpiece somewhat.

I have a Wall Lenk Craftmaster that I bought years ago at a close-out sale. Solid-state cork gripped handpieces. Wouldn't dream of parting with it. A fellow carving club member showed a tape at a meeting about making handpieces out of phenolics, ni-chrome wire lamp cord and 1/4' round plug from Radio Shack. I have since purchased a burner with a 8-32 tapped hole in the end tips with different shapes can be fashioned from 8-32 brass screws.(fish-scales,lateral lines,etc.). This burner came with a connector box with a rotary dimmer switch if I need to tame it down. My wife thinks I'm like a kid in a candy-store when I go to a carving show with lots of vendors.

I just received my new wood burner last week! I purchashed the 'Detailer' from Colwood. I had a couple of carvings I was waiting to finish, wanted to add some detail with the burner. The control goes to 10, but i never had to go past 6. Tried 8 once, but it tried to make charcoal out of my piece. Both pieces were basswood. I am using fixed tip pens, and felt no heat whatsoever.

I've been using a Colwood burner since I first started carving and wouldn't switch for anything. I started with a Detailer and then bought a Super Pro II because it has two handpieces - one for regular/detail and one for heavy duty burning. I like to burn hot, fast and hard so I'm murder on tips; therefore I buy the replaceable tips. Colwood http://www.woodburning.com is a super place to deal with. Their customer service can't be beat. I usually burn between 5 & 6 and never feel any heat, but do get a yellow stain on my first and middle finger tips from the smoke if I burn for a long time.

I use a Nibsburner and have for 12 years. I like the Colwood pens. The only problem I have with heat is if the connections isn't seated in the tip. I was told by K Curtis to wear a leather glove because of the heat.

Hey, Donna, I was wondering when you were going to show up. There are a few of your old friends over here every once in a while.

I am interested in seeing if I can build or add to my wood burning tools. Request any info on making hand pieces or a source for components that anyone might have available. Thanks. Contact me at Clancysix@yahoo.com

Hi Rick and Al!
I haven't been able to login here again since the last time, I am not sure what I'm doing wrong.
I have really only used the detail master and walnut hollow burners. Now I'm thinking of ordering a few optima pens to use wiht my detail master. I hear such good things about optima from Peg Wood and Cheryl Dow. I'll let you know if I do order them and how well they work.
burning everyone!

Donna
