Have you checked out the cane section in this forum. If you are new to carving I would say a good knife to start with and perhaps a v tool. Not certain what you what to carve on the cane a chip carving style or a wood spirit either way a good knife and if you are new to carving learn how to strop it and sharpen it,

Kinda hard to answer, here is a start. Draw knife, V - tool, carving, detail and chip knives. Strop, compound and a carving glove. Like Robert said you may get more answers in the stick and cane section. Hope this helps. Good luck and welcome.

Depends on what you mean by "cane" also. If a true cane that helps one to balance and has a top on it that the palm of the hand rests on, then you'd need a drill as well as a knife and some gouges. If you mean a hiking staff (usually about 5 feet tall, give or take), then you would not necessarily need the drill. The drill would be to drill a hole in the top of the cane shaft so you could epoxy a metal rod into the shaft and also into the carved cane topper. Go up to the green bar above, click Search, then put in "eagle cane" without the quotes.

A basic knife and set of gouges should do you quite nicely for either type of stick. I recommend the ones that Rick at Little Shavers Wood Carving Supply sells in his beginners kit. They also come with a safety glove, a strop for keeping them sharp, and Rick makes sure they are all very sharp to begin with when he ships them.

Hope this helps...
Claude
