Default Re: Senior, Junior, Members

When I became a member we simply came on board and when and if we had a contribution to make, we spoke up. It seems that now this has evolved to a point where everyone who says he or she is a new member, expects twenty or more "Glad to have you aboards". Some people seem to expect that there will be pages of accolades for anyone who posts a picture of their first carving regardless the quality of the work. Some of these first carvings are wonderful and show that there are real artists out there who certainly deserve high praise for these first attemps. When I see 20 or30, "Nice carvings, looks good, keep up the good work etc. etc. etc." I have a tendency to just move on, but always wonder if somewhere along the way there might have been a useful tip that i missed.
I have always thought this site was ment to be a how-to, tip site and place for carvers to gather for their common interest in problem solving. We do seem to have digressed a bit if that was the origional intent.
One thing that this site still does is give us inspiration and ideas for our next carvings. Much of that comes from the many great carvers who are willing to give us their time to do tutorials, tell us how to and demonstrate what a great carving should look like be it caricature, bird, painting, pyrography or something else. People such as Mark Gargac, Irish, Lynn O. Doughty, Fred Zivaldy, and many others perhaps might be singled out as, members emeritus. These people should be given some recognition for their outstanding contributions, as are retired professors who on occasion come in to provide special insite into the complexities of the process are given that recognition. The rest of us would simply be members and perhaps senior members depending on tenure and activity on the board. Simply welcoming every new member or having a comment on every thread would not count for senior member status.

Vin,

Thank you, the spoon / bowl was fun to carve. You'll enjoy carving it.

This is an old thread that was brought back to life. I just thought that I would throw my 2 cents in like other have recently done.

Here's my take on titles. I could care less about titles.

Just being a member is fine with me.

I visit this forum because I'm interested in seeing what other carvers are doing. I learn a great deal by doing this. I don't learn anything by looking at titles.

I will admit I was slightly disappointed when my post meter clicked over enough to become a senior member and no hidden board revealed itself like on some other forums that I'm a member of.

Aw CRAP!!! I got caught again by an outdated Thread!! Infuriating!! Maybe what we ought to do, if anything, is have the date flash RED off and on.

Can't believe it.

The way it is now is just fine.
