Can anyone tell me if when sawing basswood logs they should be quarter sawin or just staight cut? Thanks |

DW, I think that would depend on what you plan on carving from that log and the size of the log. My take is that for general "in the round carving" a quarter sawn piece would present you with a more manageable grain structure. At least if the log is large enough to allow for the size blank you need. For relief carving, I think a flat or "plain sawn" piece would better serve you. That said, as basswood has a pretty stable grain structure, either would be OK for in the round. You are more likely to get warping (cupping) with plain sawn than quarter sawn. Maybe one of the members who do milling can come up with a better answer. Al |
