I kind of figured you guys were joking, but...without the benefit of non-verbal communication that would reinforce my beliefs, I didn't want to make any assumptions. I also wanted to reinforce that I am open to listening to different people's ideas to make this place even better! With all of the new members who have been joining, I've been considering a buddy program where established members and moderators who have worked out the basics of posting photos, etc., could give new members a friendly face and helping hand. If people are interested, I'll start another thread and get a list going. I know everyone is already very helpful, but, when I try to look at it from a new member's perspective, I wouldn't want to bother the whole board with a bunch of questions. But if I have one person who has taken me under his or her wing, I would feel a lot better asking more questions. Bob Last edited by BobD; 02-19-2009 at 08:42 AM. |

Bob, I think your "buddy program" has a lot of merit and should be considered. I base this on the fact that we now have quite a few years of very active history behind us and have covered (and re-covered) most of the basic topics arising in woodcarving. A lot of our members are not real comfortable with computers and thus the search function can be intimidating. New members do not know the "touchy" areas or topics that come up very often. A lot of information is far more valuable if related on a more personal basis. Finally, I have found myself using private messages and email in answering some of the questions/concerns of new members. I find this much better than saying (on the public forum) just use the search function. Don't know how to make it work. Volunteers willing to list their email address" Private messaging? Let members list the areas where they feel comfortable? I do think that this should extend beyond moderators. It would have to be titled and located somewhere obvious and easy for new members to find. We would have to have it very encouraging as far as getting new comers to contact those listed. Anyway, I think you are on to something that would move us up a level in providing assistance to woodcarving. |

Darn Bob that is not a bad idea. I think that allot of times a newcommer gets too much information to digest and it may be like the old saying- A Little Dab Will Do Yaa! That is my two cents worth. Ron

I am liking the idea, buddy. I realize a lot of people are hesitant, if not downright embarrased to ask questions on a forum. And then there are the folks, and we seem to get many here, that are not used to navigating on a forum at all. A new experience for them. People could use some help in these situations and we sure have the experience base here. I gave my Mom her first computer when she was 82 years old. The thing terrified her. You should see her go now. Worst case, try your idea and post a list of volunteers that are willing to be contacted. You can put me on that list. BobT |

| my computer server was on the bum for a day or so, gee, is this the result of me saying Poop the other day??? flags and colors would be good, but no noisy sirens, it is hard for me to imagine a person who will work with a sharp knife, being out of control, but stuff happens, so it would stand to reason, likewise for a lowlife like me to lose control on my computer, i just wish i could type about 100 word per min, i would be deadly, my hats off the wci people and their work, also kudos to the man from OK, who welds the biggiest paddle south of chillicothe,oh. stirring the pots make the beans better. i know my dog told me. no he will not sell the recipe. piece and love Sam Last edited by sccarnes; 02-19-2009 at 03:39 PM.
