Exactly what is a moderator and how are they selected?

This may sound simple, but Moderators moderate the message board.

More specifically, our "job" is to help keep the site organized..... remove any offending posts, ban spammers, move posts to the best forum, keep threads on topic, generally help as necessary (within capability), etc.

I don't know the criteria for being selected......I couldn't turn it down when offered because the money was much more than what I make in my regular job.

^That's a joke.

One thing I would like to add to Mitchell's summation is something that may be self-imposed on my part. As I go through the new postings, I watch for postings, especially from members with "low post" numbers that have no responses. I want to encourage them to post and for them to realize that their message is not dumb or worse yet it is being ignored. I will post an answer, suggest something, and have, on occasion, sent private messages to a member I know could answer and ask them to take a look at this particular post.

I think the concept of "member moderators" is one of the things that keeps this board relevant and expanding.

I did get to thinking though, when offered the opportunity (BobD posed it more in the form of taking on a task for the good of the order)

...........I forgot to ask about the pay

...........must be why I haven't got a paycheck!

While I respect the moderators who monitor this site they must not have much of a sense of humor. It seems everything that's really fun or controversial they delete. In a way I guess thats a good thing but those of us out here in the hinterland with twisted minds miss the opportunity to really light the fuse occasionally.

I think I have a great sense of humor..... BUT there are many out there that don't and unfortunately, as moderators, we have to be aware of those differences.
