| | jigsaws Hello everyone.
I'm Daffni, live in North Wales. Don't really do carving but am very curious about the possibility of making hand made jigsaws from pictures. I believe one needs a scroll saw but beyond that am ignorant. |

| | Re: jigsaws Most jigsaw puzzels today are die cut. But you can use a scroll saw and laser cut is another option. It depends on complexty of the puzzel.

| | Re: jigsaws My dad used to cut jigsaw puzles for us kids from pictures glued onto 1/4" plywood. They were great until my brother decided those 500 and 1000 piece puzzles from the toy store were more challenging!
Anyway, his were cut on my inherited old Boise Crane jigsaw......pretty crude but effective piece of machinery. One of those new scroll saws would do a lot better.

| | Re: jigsaws Daff,
I wasn't advertising. I don't do that here, only offering choices and different ways. Besides if you told me you wanted to consider laser cutting I would send you to a couple of of friends that are in the UK. Their work is different than mine but good people.
If you want a scroll saw, consider the size of your puzzel , then look at the throat depth of the machine. If you run into trouble that will be the problem point.
If you go with a jigsaw, use a fine tooth blade and don't force the cut.
If you go with die-cut, the cost is high to start, but the output is volume for pennies.
Hope this helps

Don't despair. there are lots of jigsaws available in the UK. Axminster Power Tools list four or five, but for my money the Hegner outperforms them all.

| | Re: jigsaws Thank you Ash and Peter. I didn't think you were advertising Ash and am grateful for the advice. I'm still thinking about it but have not been well and also had to pay attention to my real job of language teaching.
Certaily lazers and die cut machines are out of my league but I am still toying with the idea of scroll saw. it's not for earning although I do sell my crafts once a week in a market but only really because I like making things. And I paint so I thought it might be fun to make jigsaws of my owen pictures.
Yes I see the point about the throat and will be careful.

Sorry about that. It was supposed only to be my website address but it turned itself into the wording of part of the page.
