Since some of the other members have suggested Topics for thread, may I also offer one. There is an excellent thread going right now of Sharpening that has some outstanding information. That info is timeless and applicable to every area of carving. That thread will soon be lost as it drops down into the listing. You, Admin, might consider an area called "Hall of Fame" where only the very, very best threads get moved. I would suggest it for threads as the sharpening one that have good, solid, baisc information on frequently asked questions. That way they would not get lost and would be easy for us to refer to for new members. Either you or the group could decide when a thread was worthy of being moved and therefore being saved for easy reference information. Just an idea. Susan |

Thats a good idea except the sharpening thread would then get lost in the "hall of fame" thread...how about just a sharpening thread? it is an ongoing thing especially for newbies...................

I have spent some time on another forum that uses a Hall of Fame. There you vote somehow ... or flag the thread. Then the moderators can decide if its worthy. Usually it's not how many postings but the quality of the thread as a whole. But it sure is nice to be able to easy find those threads for suggested reading. They break there Hall of Fame into sub-groupings of basic information, suggested tools and supplies, and WIPs that really show step by step work that someone else can try. But here, maybe try just an overall area first, see if it works. I just hate to see the sharpening thread get forever lost. Susan |

I agree with Susan that it should be in a Hall of Fame thread and there should be a way to select the segments of the sharpening thread that would apply. As far as selecting what should be put in the Hall of Fame I would suggest the online survey that we talked about. The administrator or whoever could list them as a ballot type survey whenever a worthy topic came up. Just an idea I have one every now and then. RonIdea

Ron, I like the ballot-survey idea. Maybe some of the long term members could suggest threads from the past that really stand out in their memories. That way we newbies, who don't even know they exisit, could read them. Hi_Ho ... why not both! Sharpening is probably the third favorite subject of any carver. It comes right after favorite wood and favorite tools! I think you can bring any group of carvers together no matter what their favorite type of carving and within 5 minutes they are on to one of those three subjects. It would be great to have a sharpening topic. Great idea! Susan Last edited by Irish; 09-24-2005 at 07:27 PM. |

I know there are alot of the sharpening threads that I haven't seen so I agree with you as to having input from long term members and recent as well. I think it is a pretty important topic since you can't carve very easy with dull knives or you shouldn't.

I think a "Hall of Fame" for threads of merit is a great idea. We have had some super discussions on a wide range of topics, many of which should be captured for review by newcomers to the board. The wealth of experience on this board is very valuable and should be available for others to benefit from, it encourages new carvers, burners, etc. Great job Susan. Bob

Sometimes I'm a little slow and maybe I'm missing something, but why couldn't it just be moved to the already existing "Tools and Sharpening" category. I kinda agree with Hi_Ho in that it's gonna eventually get buried down under no matter where it ends up eventually. I do like Susan's idea on perhaps using sub-categories and something that might need to be considered as the passing years builds up a mega explosion of information in the archives. I'm all for organization and as the forum grows it's gonna get a little tougher to search out what I'm seeking. However I can usually get there by just using the search feature. I did this last spring when Colin Partridge's article on carving live trees came out. Well, that just spawned a million questions in my mind that the printed article didn't address so I used the search feature and I found that he had already answered my questions here on the forum during the last few years of posting. The search feature works really good for me and I've found a lot of questions answered by using it with good key words.

I have used boards very similar to these before, and they use "sticky" threads which stick to the top. On another board I frequently visit (www.investorsiraq.com), the users make these sticky threads full of information about the topic the thread is in, and then the big boys upstairs make it into a "sticky" thread, which can never be knocked down. Usually people don't ask questions on it specifically, just add new information so someone who is new can easily access a vast ammount of information on a given topic. Just an idea... -Dan |
