| | Re: Classifieds I have mixed feelings about this in the sense that I don't want a bunch of commercial ads either. If I am looking for a particular item I cam post a question here and get information from people I feel I can trust. I am like wade I am a tool junkie never have the right one of enough so it would also be nice to know what others like Goody had for sale. But I think it would be too hard to police this type of ads to keep out the ones not wanted. That's my .02 worth. Ron |

To be honest, the classified rate for the magazine...$1.35 a word...isn't too bad. And that would get out to a lot of people. I just don't want to get wrapped up in the details of this...I'm already short on time <grin>.
If you want information on classifieds, give Cindy Fahs a call cindy@foxchapelpublishing.com

| | Re: Classifieds I'd really hate to see classifieds on this message board. I don't mind them in the WCI magazine and appreciate being able to find products through those ads.
However, as Ron said, we've been so lucky that everyone who's a regular on this board who sell carving "stuff" --they don't peddle their wares themselves here. Generally, if one of us is looking for something particular, we post the question and those who know where to get it jump in and answer. That I don't mind.
While I'd like to be able to clean out my carving box of unused tools, I just can't imagine how such a site could be policed and kept free of commercial abuse.
Just my opinion....

I am still amazed at how few (relatively) woodcarvers take advantage of lists on the internet. At the same time, I have had a number of the non-computer carvers ask me if they can buy/sell via the internet.
Listening to the number of carvers who check e bay on a regular basis makes me try it now and then. I lose interest fairly fast as the times I happen to be there are when only the poor quality items are available. I believe that a specialized web site for buying/selling woodcarving items would be a huge success, when the word gets out. It would be a magnet for those who simply buy/sell on the internet without expertise in woodcarving.
Therein lies the problem. I am certain it would overwhelm this board and steer it away from the successful format we currently see. We have struck a good balance of commercialization on our board. If someone is seeking, they ask. If someone finds something different, they mention. If someone is satisfied with a good level of service, they refer.
Let's leave the classifieds to arise on their own website. |

We already had a shark in the waters about a month ago, trying to sell wood. 10 posts in a couple of days, then went away. Who was he, where did he come from, is he even a carver?
Since it was not that long ago that I started, I still remember how hard it was to make a decision about buying tools and supplies. The biggest question was trust, and I trust the people and thier opinions on this board and consider them friends. Not so with any entrepeneur.
Consider Rick; he doesn't need to promote himself, because he spent so much time and effort just giving helpful advice.
There are several pro artists that have been very generous with their time and expertise. They have earned our support and I would be happy to buy their work.
And I don't have problem if some one like Goody mentions some tools he would like to sell. I feel I could trust him, and that is what PM's and telephones are for.
And, as Paul mentioned, if E-Bay is any example we are headed for trouble.
KENNY how do you make that "Dang Club" thing!
My 2 cents worth.

| | Re: Classifieds I'm in favour of keeping ads off the message board. I'm not a tool junkie (when my wife tells it the word tightwad usually creeps in somehow) so for me it would just be wasted space. And imagine searching for the post where someone mentioned the quality of a tool and having to sort out the ads to find the correct post.So I vote no thanks. Don |

| | Re: Classifieds For all the reasons others have posted previously and probably more than haven't been mentioned, I too vote no on a classified section. Plenty of other forums for that type activity.
