It's great to see so many terrific carvers, all over the U.S. I get to a few shows a year, but not as many as I'd like. We have several this month and next in Ohio so I'll get to see soem good work up close.

I used to get Chip Chats. Great magazine. A lot of inspiration in every issue.

Chip Chats is not a "how-to" magazine, although it used to have some content with patterns and articles featuring individual carvers and their work. It is the magazine of the National Wood Carvers Association, and mostly shows the work of the members and other carvers at shows and competitions, and most of that content is submitted by the clubs and groups that sponsor the shows. It's a good complement to WCI, since they really don't compete on content except for an occasional article on a big show like Dayton. Both WCI and Chip Chats do a good job of listing upcoming carving shows, carving clubs and classes. I've read both for years and enjoying watching trends develop in carving as shown at the shows and how-to articles, e.g. bark carving, wood spirits, green men. Mike

I've subscribed to Chip Chats since the mid 70's. It's never really been a magazine of an "Association". The only association connected with the NWCA is that you pay your dues and you receive a magazine. It ends there. A true association is a group of interested people gathered together to work toward certain goals and to agree on methods to reaching that goal. I have suggested that the NWCA set a standard on competition rules that could be used as a guide for many woodcarving shows across the country. While these shows would not be required to strictly follow these guidelines they would at least have a guide to consult. The only response I receive is the sound of crickets chirping. No, Chip Chats is a great magazine for seeing what others are doing but it in no way serves as an association in the true definition of the word.

That's the main reason I continue to receive it. Nice and fun to see ideas others have and can come up with.
Publication sure beats the first few years. Mimeographed info on one or two sheets, maybe with a drawn pic of an idea.
Overall, I feel that it is worth the price paid for the end result. Afterall, we didn't have publications like the two or three out there today.
Just my 2 cents.
