Default Carving in the Live oak - The dos and don'ts

Hi everyone,

This is my first post and i'm being a bit gready for information really!

A Park Ranger is cutting a 'dangerous' oak tree (around 3 foot across) down to an 8 foot stump and wants me to carve it.

Has anyone tried carving into live oak before?! Is so, is there anything to consider before i start?

For example:

1. Is fresh living oak hard to cut?
2. Is there a recommended depth to cut to when carving live oak (i'm assuming i'll have to carve a relief)?
3. Do i need to seal the stump in order to stop splitting when it cures and if so what with?

An answer to any of these questions would be MUCH appreciated!

Mark from the UK

Hi Mark,
Is this going to be a chainsaw carving?

I am from Gulfport MS and Katrina left me with plenty of live oak I still have loads of it now its dry and cured. Why do you just want to do a relief carving? Live oak is a beautiful wood for bold sculptures in the round show off the wood. It is hard and heavy but no match for quality tools power or hand to include chainsaws.
