Around here, most of the beaver chews are aspen. One of our club members carves santas from them. The hat is already "sculpted" by the big rodents! Al |

Hi Tanner, Go through the posts in the Walking sticks forum. It'll give you lots of ideas for sticks and canes.

| Tanner.... Deffinitely go for it! You can find some great wood around a beaver site. The beaver's do all the hard part. They cut it down, strip it, and cure it. All you have to do it carve it. Some of it is art in itself without any carving what so ever.

I have a little beaver chew stick in my shop...amazing little creatures, read up on them on how they have developed a good portion of the worlds meadows...they build a dam, silt moves in behind, creates a meadow.....think of all the beautiful creekside meadows you have seen thanks to this little critter.....and man in his infinite greed, kills the little guy so he could wear his hide as a hat!

I have done a couple of sticks from beaver poles that were given to me. I put a mountain man on one , you can see the teeth marks all the way down the stick , makes it quite unigue.walking sticks card.jpg,(sorry about the advertising on the card..) |

I don't see the difference between a Beaver Stick and a regular stick. Other than a point on one end what is the difference? Merle

Merle, other than already being stripped of the bark and "tooth-textured", they are just sticks! And there are usually a LOT of them around the beaver pond. When beaver gnaw down a willow or aspen, they will drag it to the pond, then anchor the stick or trunk in the mud on the bottom for winter forage. anyway, when they eat the bark off the stick will sometimes float to the surface in the spring. Some will be used to reinforce their dams, but a lot just get left floating around. Al |
