i do both buying and some selling on e-bay,always always read feedback,i've had just one bad experience there, you can get burned anywhere though.
i'm currently working on an e-bay carving trade deal right now that i can hardly wait to complete. you could put your e-bay name in your profile here couldn't you? that way people could look for for your carvings on e-bay from the board here.just an idea.
ohh and jillsy that's ok bout that lady stiffing you on the santa,i'll bet she's not enjoying it cause everytime she see's it she knows the real deal and probably has a knawing feeling in her heart....good she ought to!!!

I recently got burned on Ebay too. A woman bid on one of my Santas and never paid, despite 3 emails telling her I'd be happy to work with her if there was a problem. After alot of consideration, I decided not to do anything about it. (the Santa was only a mini selling for $20.50). Problem is, despite my having a very good reason for giving her negative feedback, she could always turn around and do the same thing to me out of spite. To me, it wasn't worth the headache to fight for such a small amount of money. So I sent her a final email telling her the debt was forgiven and to consider it an early Christmas present and that I wouldn't give her negative feedback (she actually had very good feedback) She never responded once, not even to this. I don't want my Santas going to creeps anyway!

Jillsy,

I have had simular experiences with non paying bidders on ebay too.

Here's a link to Ebay on how to handle non paying bidders. By following Ebay's steps you'll be released from the legalities of your auction. Plus you'll get the final value fee back.

Ebay monitors this process and it works better than getting into a feedback war with someone.

I don't personally use ebay but some very good friends of ours do a lot of business on it, both buying and selling. They're advice is to read, read, and read. If you follow all the rules and guidelines then the chances of you getting stuck are significantly reduced. The few times that they've been had were where they thought that the person they were dealing with was legitimate and they shortcutted the paying and mailing process. They told me that since the last time they only use Paypal and follow their rules judiciously.... no exceptions.

Jillsy,

My reply to your PM won't go through because your mail box is full.

Eddy,

You can follow all the rules as a seller and still get stung by a non paying bidder.

PayPal, ouch, 2.9% + 30 cents fee on the total amount ( item + shipping), did I say ouch .

As a buyer, hows it go? caveat emptor.

I've bought wood for knife handles exotics and domestic variate and 10 or so straight razors off eBay so far i spent over $150.00 in small sales under $20.00 reach,
i been took once when i first started because i didn't understand what i was buying, and wound up with cheap knock off Pakistani made razors, i use papal and pay immediately when i win unless i need combined shipping or something else. watch out vintage don't mean German made.

the little help files on the left side in my eBay have a lot of good information in them, after i built up a reputation for buying same type items one little tutorial popped up in the menu one day i took the time to read it it was on how to identify the products i wanted to buy and what kind of dealers to work with and which ones to stay away from, mainly common since, but if you keep them in mind when making selections it makes the difference, such as fuzzy pictures usually means there hiding something. sellers want as much as they can get. and fuzzy pictures don't cut it if there pushing good products,

i do not buy from people who don't disclose shipping and handling, i hate paying handling fees because most folks pad the shipping to envelope any additional costs they encour the handling fee is just pure profit.

some of these folks are noted for undisclosed handling then just, adding handling charges after the contract is locked in and they catch you with your wallet open then cut themselves a new deal...
if you cant find out the S&H before bidding don't bid.

I've had shipping problems where my order went to Hawaii and where a feller had a hospital stay for several weeks, but I've got what i bought so far.

keep yer pockets inside out in bad neighborhoods and carry a big stick....

Thomp,

Ebay allows a seller to add a hidden handling charge when they're setting up a listing that is automatically added to the shipping cost without the bidders knowledge.

Unfortunately, some sellers use this feature to unfairly compete with other sellers by allowing them to price their items very low and then make up the difference at the end.

When using ebays shipping calculators, if the shipping charge appears high, that's probably what's going on.

When I'm thinking about bidding on something and the shipping weight isn't listed, I'll ask the seller for that info. If I don't get a reply, I don't bid.

Brian,
Maybe im nit picking but its fine if its the cost of boxes and shipping material, most things from eBay are shipped in the free usps boxes folks order off the internet and they are mailed to them, the item is shoved in and a sheet of old news paper is packed into the box.
theres no cost there, i got no problem with folks making an honest dollar, its what were suppose to be all about,
but $5.00 handling fee so ship a straight razor thats shoved in a baggie and then into a business envelope postage paid $1.50 postage is disclosed in the auction, and the item is deceptively described so you thing your getting a useful item, and find out its a pho fake just sets me off on a tangent.... i paid 18.00 for a Pakistani razor not worth 10 cents it cut hair the first lick then dulled.. when i first started buying... it dont happen no more though,

thats what im talking about,,, and at the end of the auction its adjustable to the favor of the sellers profit margin... so if they wanted $10 bucks for the razor and you bought it for 1 they adjust 9 bucks... and tag on what they want to shipping...

Thomp,

You do have a valid gripe. I didn't take your post as a rant towards me.

I just wanted to point out a tactic that some unscrupulous sellers use to snag a few extra dollars from their auctions.

I do know that once you place a bid on an auction or are within 12 hrs. of the auction's end, the seller can not revise the listing so any added charges are done before that.

When I put an item up on Ebay, my starting price includes any handling costs. The buyer only pays for the item as bidded and the actual shipping cost, no hidden charges.
