g'day to you good folk.... my first post!!! today i purchased a collection of chisels...in good nick...a small amount of rust but edges clean. the chisels are mostly marked with the following s.j addis, a trade mark...the crossed hammers and the anvil....and on either side of this the initials w and p. on the reverse side "london".they all have "cast steel" on them. one has the words..."prize medal"...one has "sheffield"...two have trademarks that i have yet to identify. i am wondering whether anyone can give me any clues as to what i have....seems they are good chisels...ive done some research and come up with an interesting story about the addis brothers...i'dlike to know how best to date these items and then how best to care for them. i am a at the very edge of following a dream...that to "play with wood" and these items seem to have found me!!! looking forward to any feed back. regards diana |

The chisels marked London were mostly S.J.Addis,Sheffield were J>B>Addis.I believe both made tools for Ward and he them..When people talk about chisels from that era, they forget there were a lot of small companies that produced excellent tools and you can strike some great buys because everyone only knows Addis..You may wish to pick up a felt wheel , cooling paste and use that to hone your tools.I used to sell them but decided to clean out. Virtually the whole of my tools are from the 1800's. Oldest may be late 1700's. My Santa carving gimmick....Cordially Nad
