Hi everyone, this year is our club's 30th anniversary and I am looking for information on what was available 30 years ago (tools, books, etc. ) We are hoping to put on a table display at our show. Our club president will be bringing his woodburner from that time period.... a soldering iron wired to a light bulb. You changed the intensity of your burning by changing the wattage of the light bulb!!! I can hardly wait to see it. I have only been carving 20 years and I guess I am pretty lucky to have so more more available. So if anyone has any good memories of 30 years ago and would like to share I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

As far as tools go, 30 years ago, the Millers Falls palm sets 107 and the short handled 106's were in their waning years of production after 50+ years as the Boy Scout and beginning sets for many young (and old) carvers... I'm sure many people in your club own - or at least have many great stories about them. Great tools and still readily available on ebay. Many modern day sets have copied their profiles - for good reason... but few measure up to the quality of the Millers Falls steel!

I still have my first set of tools from 30 years ago. They are a set of 6 craftsman tools that came in a plastic pocket that snapped shut... uhhhh, 30 years wasn't that long ago. ![]() Christina |

I would suggest any of Tangerman's books on carving and you might check as I believe that Chip Chats may have been in publication at that time. Susan |
