Can anyone identify this young hawk? I am pretty sure it is a hawk. It was in this tree for several hours a while back. Thanks

Paul, I'm not toatally sure but suspect it's a Nighthawk. Facinating bird to watch fly, flight is simular to a swallow catching flying insects. Oddly enough the namesake of a Semi-Pro Football team that was in my hometown back in the 70's. See if this link does not help you. I agree that it looks like a Nighthawk. They have a white stripe on their wing which you may have see when this one took off. Isn't the Nighthawk also called a Whiporwhill? Butch

Thanks Jim and Butch, It does look like a Nighthawk. I didn't get to see it take off. It let me get close to it, I think it thought it was hid.

So Paul, how soon can we expect to see a carving of this little guy? Not a common subject but would make a cool carving. BTW I sure like your site and carvings! |

Hey, I think you guys nailed it! It is a nighthawk and it's rare that people actually see them as they are a really shy BOP. Welcome to Sierra Creek Studios |

Falconer they are a shy bird, but I graduated from High School in Newton, Ia. And there were a lot of them nesting on Comercial rooftops downtown. They were facinating to watch hunting insects when I was a teenager hanging out on the town square. |

Jim, carving one would really be interesting, however, painting it would be a challenge. If you have anymore good photos I would be intrested in posting them on my website if thats ok with you? Welcome to Sierra Creek Studios |

Jim, that would make a good carving. Like Falconer said getting enough good photos to help in painting. I got a couple of other pictures at the time but did not want get any closer than I was. I didn't want to scare him.
