| | Young Hawk Can anyone identify this young hawk? I am pretty sure it is a hawk. It was in this tree for several hours a while back. Thanks

| | Re: Young Hawk Paul, I'm not toatally sure but suspect it's a Nighthawk.
Facinating bird to watch fly, flight is simular to a swallow catching flying insects.
Oddly enough the namesake of a Semi-Pro Football team that was in my hometown back in the 70's.
See if this link does not help you. All About Birds: Common Nighthawk

| | Re: Young Hawk I agree that it looks like a Nighthawk. They have a white stripe on their wing which you may have see when this one took off.
Isn't the Nighthawk also called a Whiporwhill?

| | Re: Young Hawk Thanks Jim and Butch, It does look like a Nighthawk. I didn't get to see it take off. It let me get close to it, I think it thought it was hid. |

| | Re: Young Hawk So Paul, how soon can we expect to see a carving of this little guy?
Not a common subject but would make a cool carving.
BTW I sure like your site and carvings! |

| | Re: Young Hawk Falconer they are a shy bird, but I graduated from High School in Newton, Ia.
And there were a lot of them nesting on Comercial rooftops downtown.
They were facinating to watch hunting insects when I was a teenager hanging out on the town square. |
