hi all
well this is my best carving yet . lol i also got a better cam for showing . it only took me 12 hours to do it. i found out i am better at carving birds so i guess i will be doing them most of all.

Tim,

Your carving is very good. The shape looks pretty much right and the painting Â*
is good. Â*My first few bird carvings were barely recognizable as birds .
Yours is really good.

One minor thing I would suggest for the next one: It should be a little narrower
through the eye area to form the eye channel. This will ad a lot of character to
the bird. The head is the most important part of the bird to get right because
the personality comes mainly from the head.

Here is a picture of what I mean.


Also, the beak should be a little bit narrower. The width of the beak is rarely
greater then the height. Another good rule of thumb is that the top half of the
beak makes up 2/3 of the entire height of the beak and the lower half makes
up 1/3. Of course, there are exceptions to both of these general rules.

Knowing basic bird anatomy is really important to get the bird looking as lifelike
as possible.

Great job, Doesn't it feel good when you get a carving finished and it's setting there looking at you. I always look at a carving and wonder how I did it. And then I have to thank God for helping me. Gergie,

Thanks DAS for thetips. My first eagle carved on top aof a walking staff was that way on the beak. IT was wider than it was tall. I have told my son, I would carve him another one to put on his walking staff but he refuses to let me. he said, Dad, that was carved for me by my dad for my getting Eagle rank and I like it.Carve another one for me if you want but that one if left alone, Kind of had tears in my eyes when I heard him say that. To think that carving meant that much to him made me . Since that first Eagle, I have carve them but the beak has been narrower. Again, thanks for the tip.
