Your carving is very good. The shape looks pretty much right and the painting Â*
is good. Â*My first few bird carvings were barely recognizable as birds

Yours is really good.
One minor thing I would suggest for the next one: It should be a little narrower
through the eye area to form the eye channel. This will ad a lot of character to
the bird. The head is the most important part of the bird to get right because
the personality comes mainly from the head.
Here is a picture of what I mean.
Also, the beak should be a little bit narrower. The width of the beak is rarely
greater then the height. Another good rule of thumb is that the top half of the
beak makes up 2/3 of the entire height of the beak and the lower half makes
up 1/3. Of course, there are exceptions to both of these general rules.
Knowing basic bird anatomy is really important to get the bird looking as lifelike
as possible.
