Truly impressive Nancy. I love the texture of the skin. How did you do that, If you don't mind giving away trade secrets. It's a great carving.

Thank you Dylan & Blake

Well to be honest, I did work hard on the skin texture BUT I truly didn't know if what I was doing would give the results I wanted or not. First I did what Hi-Ho Sliver recommended (someone else did too, sorry I can't remember who right now). I took a rod of the diameter I wanted and put the tip on the wood hitting the other end with a small light hammer. I found if I kept the rod moving over the carving continuously, tapping the other end at the same time, I got a good random pattern. Then sand all the areas "tapped" down to level. wet the wood and the bumps pop up to the original level. Works great. Then I burned with a sharp "J" tip using short strokes very randomly. Then put in some longer strokes to sort of show thin hairs. That's about it.

Great carving, Nancy! I especially like the way you treated the skin - wrinkles and overall texture. It looks like it could walk off the stand!!

Yes, Nancy, it's good to be back, and yes, it was a great trip. I had a package waiting for me from one of the carvers on the ornament exchange, and it was a santa ornament. I couldn't have gotta a better welcome home gift. Great friends here. Thanks for the welcome.
