Default Unicorn

Unicorn inspired by the Shawn Cipa pattern. It's 11 inches to the tip of the horn. It was carved from a piece of kiln dried cherry that had been stored for many years. The wood was somewhat brittle and a bear to carve. Rough-out was done using gouges and mallet. General shaping was done with a Foredom power carver, utilizing various coarse to medium burrs and finishing was accomplished with palm gouges and knives. Finish is two coats of Minwax Antique Oil Finish.

The horn was carved separately from American Holly (a very white wood). I wasn't happy with the unfinished holly, so I carved a second horn and painted it gold. Comparing the two, I chose to go for the gold.

Super job, Bill This whimsical unicorn gives you a happy feeling just looking at him. I think it's great when an artistic piece like this can evoke an emotional response immediately in the viewer. Great carving. Love that cherry.
