Default Turtle and lion

This frog I started this summer after a trip to Oregon. It is spalted maple that I did a bad job of picking out. Parts of it were very soft-to rotten so I wasn't able to get the shape I wanted. I almost threw it away twice, but just had to go back to it. I decided it is what it is. It is coated with two coats sun-thickened linseed oil and turp mix. Then waxed with a paste wax. This was done with an exacto knife and a mortise chisel.

The lion is a practice piece, I want to make a chess set and wanted to see if I stand a chance! It is basswood, coated with tung oil, a little paint and feeding wax. It was carved with my new flex hand tools, which I love! But I think I have to start carving deeper, just my opinion.

Comments welcome.

Umm...I don't mean to sound critical Sappy, but.....where's the turtle? LOL I think you meant "frog", I hope you meant frog, because he's a great looking frog. I love the spalting effect. I like the lion as well. Good work. Sorry if you really did mean turtle for the first one. Joe.

Frog! Yeah, I meant frog! Been one of those days! I was thinking turtle because the frogs legs look more turtle like and I was going to comment on that! Thank you for correcting me! I think I had that frontal lobotomy you mentioned.

Hey Sappy,
Like the lion and love the frog, looks like great detail to me. I know exactly what you mean about the spalted maple, been working on a large piece for a few days now and its very hard to get the detail you want due to "bad spots", and why do they always seem to show up exactly where detail is needed? Great job!
