Other Countries ??????? Your Kidding.....I don't mean to sound rude but don't think for one minute that the good old U.S.A is the only place where bird carving is as popular as it is. I'm from Canada and we have lots of great carvers up here....oops probably cause we are locked into a deep-freeze so we have lots of time to be creative. One of the best carvers in the world is Pat Godin and he's from Ontario, Canada...so is Jason Lucio, another from the province of Ontario. England is a place where carving is really taking off, I'm not sure what the numbers are but some of the work I've seen was pretty impressive. Blackjaxe |

Well,I guess perhaps I should have explained myself more clearly. First of all I have all the respect and admiration of Pat Godin's well documented artistic ability in carving realistic birds as well as I do for Floyd Scholz also of world wide fame in carving birds of prey. That being said my interest was meant in knowing if there are other world wide "home shop carvers" such as many on this forum that enjoy carving birds equally realistically well carved but seldom enter any contests and on occasions sell their carvings or take on commissions. I believe these carvers that frequently post their work and humbly ask for our comments are great carvers and are more than willing to help us further enjoy our hobby. My question still stands as asked with further explanation. Any knowledge and input from world wide bird carvers in other countries as well as our very own WIC bird carvers that so often very willingly offer their bird carving abilities and assistance to all of us in the daily learning process of bird carving. I hope I'm clear about the question I asked and not meant to ruffle anyone's feathers,no pun intended. Oscar |

Nice Explanation Oscar, you have posted a very interesting question as to how world-wide is the type of carving we seem so capitivated by. And your probably right as to how many are simply "Basement" carvers who rarely ever show or compete with their art......there must be hundreds if not thousands. I'm a little nervous about getting on a computer let alone posting but here goes. Larry from Abbotsford, BC Canada(West Coast) for those who live and breathe back east. I am one of those basement beginners who have enough Family birthdays, anniversaries Christmas etc to just give away carvings. A beginner of 3 years now and just entered my second show. I wish I had a thumbnail to upload but I do have a link to my carving club's newsletter that has the picture of my latest carving. Any comments, critiques (good or otherwise) would be appreciated. (Raven and Masks). I enjoy bird carving and lately have been trying to animate or story-tell with the carvings. Not sure if this is a good route to go but it is one that reminds me of childhood days going through any museum and remembering how that spurred on my personal imagination . . so hopefully this style will do the same for others. Regards; Larry newsletter link http://centralfraservalleywoodcarver...rch%202009.pdf and oh yes . . major thankyous to Pat Godin, Lori Corbett, Jeffrey Whitting sand all of you who write books and tutorials that let me, the beginner, to keep trying! |
