That is a true piece of art absolutly supurbly done. If you wouldnt mind sharing as to the process of sanding the burl after the carving was done. I have a maple burl about the same size. It has been sitting in my workshop for ever. You have given me the incentive to dig that burl out and give it a try. Again a magnificent piece of art.

After I finished the head , tail and front foot, my finish process was, I sanded all the parts that I carved down to 400 grit, then proceeded with the Watco /thinner 50% mix, in between each coat I used a mix of the synthetic
steel wool what ever I thought the piece need to get the finish I wanted.
I always finish using the "white" finiest grit. after 5 or 10 coats I use Johnsons Paste floor wax, which gives me the soft luster.
Thats pretty much it, nothing fancie just a lot of sanding and rubbing.
