| | Re: Stylized Buffalo from a Maple Burl You caught the beast's shaggy hide well with that piece. Makes him look downright thoughtful as well. I've added it to my collection of web art for further study. Good work! |

| | Re: Stylized Buffalo from a Maple Burl That is marvelous. I like the natural flow of the burl with the impression of the animal. This is the sort of thing that wins awards and survives for centuries. |

| | Re: Stylized Buffalo from a Maple Burl Beautiful! How do you clean up a burl for carving/finish? The parts that will be left uncarved? I have a manzanita burl that is just waiting to become a bird. I want to do it stylized and leave most of the burl in it's natural state, minus the dirt etc. Any tips would be much appreciated.

I don't know how much dirt crud is on the Burl, but, this is how I would proceed and finish.
First I would try and wash it with soap and water, brush and not a real stiff brush. After I got off at the dirt etc and carved the piece.
I finish all my work with Watco oil cut 50% paint thinner. Spray on and wipe off after about 5 to 10 coats what ever I think looks good, between each coat I use synthetic steel wool, sold at most harware stores" white"
then after it drys for a week or so I use Johnson's floor wax, if you can still buy it tryed the other day they didn't know what I was talking about!!!!
Anyway that's how I go about finishing some of my pieces.
How this helps.
Bill
If I can be of any other help plese let me know...... |
