| | | Re: SNOW I haven't used anything for snow, but have carved and painted rocks for habitat, and when simulating quartz (white with poor crystaline structure) have used a white base, then washed with a mix of white and pearlized blue/white. seems to me this might work equally as well for snow, with a little experimentation.

| | Re: SNOW Rick, calm down, I was only asking a question. I agree that woodcarvings should be made of wood but sawdust is wood??!! Without getting into 'splitting hairs' how would we catagorize a carved wooden puppet that has been dressed up in cloth clothing? A woodcarving? A carved wooden doll? A Sthingy?

| | | Re: SNOW You might also try vinyl spackling that is used to patch holes in wood, sheetrock, etc. I work at Lowe's in the paint section and there was a can that had busted open, so some of my co-workers and I made a snowman. I worked pretty good. |

| | | Re: SNOW Has anyone thought of trying out the real thing? You will have to keep your carving in the deep freeze until you are ready to show someone and then only give them a short peek. It is a little tricky to take to shows but a little dry ice will help. Or you could only enter shows that are outside and below 30 degrees. There must be one somewhere. |

| | | Re: SNOW Nancy, there are many many things that I can't do. One of them is carving a santa! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr You know I have tried....and you haven't seen any photos....lol :'(
Maybe I can get you to send me one of your lovely patterns??? Please???
I did that snow horse about 20 years ago, before I discovered soft sculpture, burning and carving. Well actually I had tried all 3 in high school, but didn't do any good at them until I got much older
SO.....will ya send me a really cool santa pattern???? Then maybe I can be as good as you! 8)

| | | Re: SNOW Once again I come here with a question and find out some one else has asked it and all kinds of great answers are here waiting for me...are you people physic or what!!
I want to carve my Dad a red fox in snow for Christmas, nice to know the snow shouldn't be an issue!
Captain, I carve dolls, they have wood heads, (from the chest up) arms from the elbows down, legs from the knees down and cloth bodies. I then make their outfits. I recently entered one in a Woodcarver's show. My other, in the round pieces did very well, the doll got an honorable mention. One of the judges told me my doll would have been rated higher if it had been all wood. But then, of course, she wouldn't have been a doll! Ha!
He did say that he felt it would do very well in an art show that wasn't just for wood. We'll see, I'm entering her and another doll in our town's Autumn Leaf Festival Art Show next month. We'll see how they do there.
Thanks again for 'reading my mind' about how to do snow! Callynne | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
