SNOW

I AM CARVING A POLAR BEAR AND WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT IF ANYONE KNOWS A WAY TO SIMULATE SNOW OR ICE.

I had carved an eskimo ice fishing and I used a piece of white styrofoam as a base.I looked just like snow.

check some craft stores there is a product that is like flocking that is made just for such a thing. once apon a time i knew a brand name that was recomended as the best but you could torture me now and never find out cause I just don't remember.

8) I have some at home, but unfortunately, I am at work right now. I have (successfully?) used Elmers glue and baking powder in a pinch. It looks good and seems to hold up well; I can get the name of the marketed product when I get home tonight. Now quit yelling!!!!!!!!!

The best selection of snow, grass, etc. that I have seen was at a hobby store for model railroaders. They had minature trees, weeds, grass, mud..... you get the picture.

Hey Guys (and Gals),
Why spend money when you already have all you need for free.
Collect the sawdust from your bandsaw, sift it through a wire mesh strainer, then sprinkle it on your base that has been well coated with Elmer's or carpenters' glue (thinned 50/50 with water. Let it dry several hours, then shake off the excess. Airbrush or thin wash painting will give you excellent snow results. You can even carve in drifts before applying the sawdust.

Pinefeathers, have you ever tried using the glue-and-sawdust method to make hair or beards?

The names of the snow I have are:'Sparkle snow' and 'Fantasy snow' by Delta, and 'Snow-Tex' by DecoArt.
I have not tried them yet, since I only recently purchased them.
Now, if you folks start making hair and beards out of sawdust and adhesive, I will disown you. I have nothing against creating habitat from misc. materials, but woodcarvings should be made from wood. A wise man once said: 'That's all I have to say about that.'

My personal preference is for snow to be smooth and slick (maybe that's because because my carvings are rough and fuzzy :-[ ??). The only place I really use/need snow is on a base and when I first started I slowly and carefully carved each tiny drift, drip and swirl. Took me longer to do the base than the carving!!

Now I buy something called 'Texturing Paste' at any craft shop or even WalMart (it's just a thick, white acrylic gunk), stir it as much as I can and glob it on the base and let it hang over the edges. It smooths out under its own weight (but it will crack if applied too thickly). After it's dried a day or two I paint it with my regular acrylic paint and I'm ready to go.

Rick, I've bought the Snow-Tex stuff too but it has glitter in it and IMHO glitter is a bit too .... hmmmmm..... can't think of word. I just don't want glitter in my snow but have no objection if others do.
