Hi Barney, Welcome to the site, you can probably just Google some images, and make up your own pattern. Just decide what thickness you want.

Good luck, Tom

I've seen books prepared for children with sharks and whales, etc. Also there are small models at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc. Good luck. DM

Hi Barney Murray,

I hope by now that you have carved a shark or two.

I have used Wildbirdcarver's suggestions and they work well. I bought a small model of a primate from a toy store for a monkey carving I did for a friend.

Also, there is a magazine called Zoo Books that is published by the San Diego Zoo. They have a website you might check out. These magazines are written for young readers; however, they have excellent drawings showing anatomy and photographs of fish, animals and birds. I have some of these magazines and have used them for carvings of turtles and recently a carving of an otter.

Google has an Image Search section that generates thumbnail pictures instead of a listing of websites. This allows me to review a large number of photos and select a few for downloading. Using my word processor I put some of the downloaded reference photos on a sheet and use that sheet while carving.

Also check out the books available from Fox Chapel Publishing.

The more reference material you have for a project the better your carving will be. That is true even if you use a pattern from a carving book.

Have fun carving and please show us one of your sharks.
