My first carving is in the possession (or possibly not anymore) of an old flame. So this is my second attempt. That was about 10 years ago, and I didn't know what to do after that. So I left it and now my 18 month old son plays with it in his sand/water table. He's starting to crack up now and he broke his leg. Nooooo, the horse, the horse. The young lad is ok. Just thought I'd share.

Good one, a horse would be a difficult 2nd carving, you did well. Reminds me of the old carving my dad just gave me that is about 50 years old that his uncle did. A horse from a horse and wagon set he did for a childs Christmas gift. Nice job! Corey

on horse legs--they are easy to break off-- unless u run the wood grain the length of the leg-- dont worry about breaking the neck off-- ive never done that-- but until u run the grain long ways on the legs-- its very likely to happen and i see it done incorrectly so offten. i see that you have done it correctly-- so i cannot imagine how a leg got broken nice carving by the way-- my second horse didnt look that good--not sure the 3, 4 or the 5th one did. Well the horse had a happy life (if not somewhat neglected) for ten years or so. But he lost a leg when my son tried to see if he would bounce. Eh ... he doesn't. I haven't glued it back on yet, just put it firmly in place. I've no doubt my son will try again.

peg the leg---ive used tooth pics or very small dowels- it wont break again tho i dont think if u use elmers --it will break in the same place a second time. it will be hard to clamp a leg, so the peg i think willhelp Last edited by chuckbolton; 11-20-2008 at 10:57 AM. |

The tooth pick is a great idea. I'll keep that in mind, if I ever get around to gluing it. Thanks for the advice and the good reviews.
