Hi Bill,

these dekes look really great! I really do like the stylized duck, it's such a neat concept and change from the regular decoys. (including the ones I do!) Great job!!!

Thank you all for the complements, I'm glad you guys liked the decoys.

Hey Russ,
The pine shelving boards used for these decoys were cut out using a scroll saw and then glued with titebond 3. Here's a picture of the glue-up.

Brent, I started out carving ducks too but it's been a while since I've done one.

Thanks Mark, I'm never satisfied with my paint jobs there not as good as yours so the less I depend on a brush the better.

HappY Trails

Bill

Hi Bill, is that the method of gluing that is used for all Decoys? Sure is a good one. Thanks for showing, makes me want to try to do one. Merle

Hey Bill,

if it's any consolation, I'm never satisfied with my paint jobs, either. I like to do the antique and distressing process mostly because I like the look of an old decoy, but it sure helps hide those oopses!

Hi Merle, I really like your waterfowl burnings, excellent work!

Most of the decoys I have done were from band saw cut-outs and the head and body were separate. I attached the heads with a dowel and glue in the beginning but then started using 5 min. epoxy and wire because you don't need to clamp the carving to let the glue dry and you also did not have to make sure the dowel was perfect so you would have a good joint between the head and body.

I originally wanted to do a few decoys out of other woods like Brazilian cherry, red cedar or walnut using this method because we can't get cut-outs in these woods. Pine boards are inexpensive and available and I thought they would be good to use to make a pattern and experiment with different designs but now that I have done these I really like the pine because I can hand pick the grain with the decoy in mind.

Hi Bill, when I started to carve I told myself I didn't want to carve Ducks,I don't know why I felt that way,but after I got into Carving I tried the WOOD DUCK that was in WCI. The carving turned out OK, but my painting SUCKED. It's in my gallery if you care to have a look. I removed all the paint and left just the White trim. Your Ducks have the Look and Want To Touch feeling. Good job Bill, Merle
