This is another scroll saw folk art style decoy from a pine shelving board, it's 12" long x 4.5" wide x 5.25" tall. This decoy took about 6 hrs. from start to finish not including dry time for glue, sanding sealer, paint and Deft clear coat. It's made of 6 ea. 3/4" (dressed) pine boards, roughed out with mallet and then shaped and sanded with a power carver, Pthalo green and snow goose red water base paint dusted with air brush, 8mm glass eyes and clear Deft wood finish. The tail is not quite wide enough so the next Red Breasted Merganser will have 3 center boards instead of two like the first Red Head decoy. HappY TrailS Bill ^v^ |

I like the simplicity of mixing paint (striking green head), natural wood and curved lines. Beautiful!

| Thanks guys, I really enjoy doing this style decoy, the pattern is from a decoy I did for my nephew a few years ago but this one took a LOT less time but I agree with Paul, sometimes you can get a good result by keeping it natural and simple, I like this one as well as the one I did for my nephew. Bill, What do you mean by calling them scroll saw decoys. Is that how you start the blank? The merganser is stunning. I really like stylized decoys, and your is a beautiful one. Russ |

Beautiful piece! I think Paul's comments captured my reaction. One of very first scroll saw projects was a duck made out of scrap 2" x 8" from a new house that going up down the street. Although no where near as nice as this one, I was pleased with the results, especially for an early project. I ended up giving as a Christmas gift to a friend who collects ducks. The best part was when he phoned me later in the day to ask if I had actually made it. He didn't know that I had started carving and scrolling. Thanks for posting this. Brent |
