Can't help you with the rough outs, but Heritage Building Specialties
1-800-524-4184 sells 2x 4 and 4 x 6 bass wood by the foot. I bout a 4 foot piece of 4 x 6 from them and think it was around $25. If you need another size my guess is they can cut it for you. If you want other wood I know they have it but whether it's in carving block size or not don't know. But, it's a free phone call anyway.

Sources for cut outs, roughouts, and wood really depends on what part of the country you are located. Sugar Pine is a good one out west (although they have a catalogue and are online for anywhere). Rossiters Roughouts in Wichita, KS does a good job on roughouts and wood usually. There's a couple of wood suppiers up north--Slim's Woodshed in Harmony, MN and Heinecke Wood in Cumberland, WI --both have excellent wood and roughouts. Out east or south, I dunno about. Some of these suppliers come to our regional shows and that is a big help to reduce shipping and be able to pick out your own.

Good Luck, but if you narrow down your search, perhaps we can help more specifically. It is tough to just be starting out and trying to find good suppliers. A local carving club can help you locate suppliers they are familiar with already.

The Beaver Dam Decoy business has been sold to a fellow from Akron, Ohio, and he will continue their fine products. I've purchased their turnings and water fowl 'blanks', and they're amazing. Some you could just paint to finish! I'm about to start a blue herron, and I'll carve and burn the feathers, but the basic shape is already done and the eyes are installed. The new owner is attending carving shows and selling the inventory. I'll post his new web-site and address soon. BTW, their Santa turnings are the best basswood I've ever carved.
