Thanks Paul! I appreciate your kind words. Next project just got the final glue-up a couple hours ago. It is another dolphin, but roughly 3 times larger carved from 2 - 2X4s glued side by side. The base/habitat is a little different, and I think I like it a bit better than the first. I was so proud of the glue-up as the seam was totally invisible all the way around the piece as I carved, but when the stain went on the glue line came out in all it's glory... LOL! As usual I used both bladed hand tools and power carving somewhat indiscriminately. Whatever works best to get the necessary wood out of the way to reveal the image in my head. The purists are to be admired, but I'll never be one of them.

The illusion might be that there is just a single way to achieve the end. Those who follow are a talent of my respect. While there is a virtue in the very exclusion of all power tools, there's a bunch of us who wish to reveal a concept in the wood medium. I am of the school of thought that the vision revealed in the wood is the goal to be unveiled (something that my grandmother advised me of, some 50+ years ago). Most of the time that works out faster than I can carve.
All I did this evening was to carve and plane the handle pieces for my froe which arrived from the blacksmith today. My-oh-my but does it split staves straightly.
Huh! Is "straightly" an honest word?
Watch the stone carvers of Cape Dorset, working in serpentine (NOT soapstone) is there are blasphemous flaw in their work? (Youtube)

Rob,

I read your post several times, and danged if I'm still not sure exactly where your going here. I see the time stamp is 1:04am... hmmm Glad to hear your froe is working out well for you. I'd like to see a photo of it. I'll definately check out the Cape Dorset stone carving. I do a bit of stone carving too, and not all soapstone either. Thanks for your post.
