Bill,
From time to time, I do some minor detailing in the house and trust me, the dust does get away from a dust box. Even with a powerful vac system of some kind, I'd encourage you to get a good dust mask of some kind to keep it out of your lungs. Wood dust can be deadly. Spalty wood has spoors that can take up residence in your lungs and cause major damage.

If your apartment has carpet, the dust will filter down into the carpet. You may want to put some kind of tarp down to help contain the mess-and aid in the clean-up. If you live alone, it's your mess! If you share the apartment with someone, good luck with the negotiations! In our house, my husband says he has tater chips under his chair and I have wood chips, but I'm still the one to clean up!

Thanks Donna,

I thought wood dust would be pretty harmless, but I guess not. I may have to rethink the inside the house setup... may have to find another hobby as I do not have a shop.

Thanks,

Bill

I set up at a desk, with dust collector set on a drawer pluued out to the left, I wear an apron to catch the worst part and the collector gets the majority of the rest. I also tuck the left edge of the apron to the front to the Razorair collector, so there is no gap for dust to go. Then when power carving, I direct the dust exaust towards the collector, I use my right hand for holding the unit.

Read through the old messages here: Wood Carving Tips and Techniques - Woodcarving Illustrated Message Board here: Power Carving - Woodcarving Illustrated Message Board and here: Woodcarving Tools, Technology & Sharpening - Woodcarving Illustrated Message Board

There have been lots of people posting photos and drawings of their dust collection devices.

Hi Slather,

Thank you so much for the reply. I must say, this has to be the most friendly, helpful message board that I have encountered. To say I'm new to carving is an understatement. When I was around 11-12 years old I recieved as a Xmas gift a couple of hand carved ducks from North Carolina. Even as a kid I was intrigued with those carvings, still not sure why, maybe it was the fact that my Dad was a big outdoorsman and I spent most of the weekends of my youth with him before he died out on the water. So, I have always had a fascination with the outdoors, wood carved waterfowl. I am now 41 yrs old I hate to admit and finally want to do this as a hobby..I find it so relaxing. I live in an apartment in Florida..luckily on the water..so the bird life is amazing..and so inspiring. My equipment consist of a dull(which I can't sahrpen for the life of me) carving knife, a set of chisels, and an electric dremel tool...and a bunch of Basswod pieces. So, I am new to this but look foward to making some pretty pieces that I can be proud of. Anyway, thanks again for the responses..take care

Bill
